Deciphering Harnel-Aoot in Gurdjieff's World Creation

Our understanding has been muddied by associating the Octave Note Discontinuities of P.D. Ouspensky's 'In Search of the Miraculous' with Gurdjieff's Stopinder Mdnel-Ins in Holy Planet Purgatory in 'Beelzebub's Tales'. Of course, Ouspensky's book are the teachings of Gurdjieff to his pupils but represents his earlier thoughts on the subject.

This essay will show that Note Discontinuities do not exist and how Harnel-Aoot's three-fold dissociative identity disorder can be cured by redefinition and simplification.

In this process, it will be shown that the apparent contradictions that have arisen have come about by trying to introduce the nine positions of the Enneagram into the seven positions of the Octave without including the action of the Law of Three (Triamazikamno) within the Law of Seven (Heptaparaparshinokh) especially the World Creation of His Endlessness.

BT39.753 "Our COMMON FATHER OMNI-BEING ENDLESSNESS, having decided to change the principle of the maintenance of the existence of this then still unique cosmic concentration and sole place of HIS most glorious Being, first of all altered the process itself of the functioning of these two primordial fundamental sacred laws, and HE actualized the greater change in the law of the sacred Heptaparaparshinokh."

May I beg His Endlessness' pardon that "No change in Triamazikamno is discussed!"


The Octave note discontinuities: Ouspensky (SM chapters 7 & 14):
  1. 'mi-fa'
  2. 'ti-do'
  3. 'sol-la' (not a discontinuity but suggested by symmetry)



Readjusted discontinuities
Gurdjieff's Stopinder Mdnel-Ins in Holy Planet Purgatory:

BT40.831-2: The first two Mdnel-Ins were constated by the twin brothers Choon-Kil-Tez arid Choon-Tro-Pel, after the loss of Atlantis, and added to the seven notes to be the law of ninefoldness.

BT39.753-755:The three gaps in the Stopinder octave are described as created by His Endlessness:

  1. 'mi-fa' 'mechano-coinciding-Mdnel-In.' - "His Endlessness lengthened the Stopinder ('mi-fa') 'mechano-coinciding-Mdnel-In' with the purpose of providing the 'requisite inherency' for receiving, for its functioning, the automatic affluence of all forces which were near"
  2. 'ti-do' "HE shortened the Stopinder ('ti-do') 'intentionally-actualized-Mdnel-In' - to be dependent only upon the affluence of forces, obtained from outside through that Stopinder."
  3. 'sol-la' Harnel-Aoot- "its disharmony flowed by itself from the change of the two aforementioned Stopinders."

  4. Apparently, Gurdjieff derived these two Mdnel-Ins from the two discontinuities in Ouspensky and ascribed their characteristics based on the influences in certain situations:

    1. For 'mi-fa' the first Mdnel-in he observed that the Ray of Creation has organic life on this planet acting as a bridge for the passage of 'mi-fa' and also that the air from the lungs in the Food Octave performs the same function, thus he uses the words 'automatic' and 'near'.
    2. For 'ti-do' ('si-do' ), he observed that in the Ray of Creation the energies appear to flow easily from the ending 'do' in the higher octave into the lower octave through the gap at 'ti' and thus are dependent on 'affluence' from the 'outside' octave.
    3. Since 'sol-la' is not a discontinuity, but seems to be necessary for the symmetry as shown in the previous Ouspensky figure, he ascribes a complicated three-fold action to be discussed later on.

      The problem arises that upon further analysis using music theory and adding half notes, these discontinuities in the Ouspensky musical Octave in Just Intonation disappear:

      The surprising results in this diagram is that:

      • all three vertices of the triangle exactly match three of the most consonant intervals: the Root note of the octave (Unison), the Perfect Fourth ('fa'), and the Major Sixth ('la').
      • The sequence of 'do' (Unison), 'fa' (Perfect Fourth), 'la' (Major Sixth) clearly leads harmonically to the next octave 'do' and this follows the inner triangle.
      • The most consonant Perfect Fifth 'sol' is in the bottom center directly opposite the apex of the triangle as if echoing the Unison.
      • The righthand side is very crowded from 'do' to 'mi' as if it needs the uplift of 'fa', the Perfect Fourth.
      • The note 'ti' wants to resolve in 'do'.
      • More importantly is to observe and hear how the three sets of three within the octave demonstrate how the Law of Three acts within the Seven Notes:

        1. (Active) 'mi'-'fa', 'sol'
        2. (Neutralizing) 'sol'-'la', 'ti'
        3. (Passive) 'ti'-'do', 're'

      Next we look at how this relates to Gurdjieff 's World Creation in Holy Planet Purgatory

      This 'Just Intonation' diagram appears to be the original state of the Universe before creation and thus it is clearly: "Autoegocrat". Everything is in balance with The Law of Three (Triamazikamno) fitting perfectly into the Law of Seven (Heptaparaparshinokh). There is no action possible as the so-called discontinuities or points of action do not exist. BUT, the only problem is that in Autoegocrat We Do Not Exist!

      To prevent the erosion of his Universe from the flow of Time, His Endlessness changed the Universe to "Trogoautoegocrat" by lengthening and shortening two Stopinders. And here we might imagine "Mullah Nassr Eddin" saying, "By monkeying around with the perfection of Creation, God has essentially created angels and devils and, along with them: us humans."

      BT39.753 "These changes in the functioning of the sacred Heptaparaparshinokh consisted in this, that in three of its Stopinders HE altered the what are called 'subjective actions' which had been until then in the Stopinders, in this respect, that in one HE lengthened the law-conformable successiveness; shortened it in another; and in a third, disharmonized it."

      First it must be understood that a "Stopinder" is not the same as a musical note, even though it is implied by Chapter 40 'Beelzebub Tells How People Learned and Again Forgot About the Fundamental Cosmic Law of Heptaparaparshinokh'. A musical note on Beelzebub's piano (BT40.847-8) cannot be lengthened or shortened. If a singer lengthens a note it is called a "sustain" which sets a steady amplitude level which does not change its tone or pitch aside from some overtones. If the mathematical representation of the note is raised or lowered by "vibrometers" as described in Chapter 41 'The Bokharian Dervish Hadji-Asvatz-Troov', it would be out of tune and cause the effect of a "boil" (BT41.894).

      My ingenious explanation to the dilemma of lengthening and shortening Stopinders can be seen in these two diagrams as in my essay Gurdjieff's Creation Story Deciphered in two Enneagrams:

      This second diagram describes how it was necessary to move 'Fa' clockwise around the circle creating a interval between 'Mi' and 'Fa' and to move 'La' clockwise creating an interval between 'Sol' and 'La', having the effect of shortening the interval between 'Ti' and 'Do' (even though, actually, it remained the same). Note: that this creates nine points when the two points of the triangle are included as in an Enneagram.

      To visualize the problem more clearly, the Just Intonation note positions are shown superimposed on a precise Enneagram which was superimposed upon an enneagram with points numbered from 1-9:

      By In this diagram it can be seen that the Just Intonation notes line up perfectly. Sol (G) is opposite do (C) and the other three notes fa (F), do (C), and la (A) are exactly on corners where the inner triangle meets the circle. But this symmetry does not match the Enneagram points and or three places (X1 & X2 & X3) that Ouspensky and Gurdjieff show as discontinuities/points of action. (That these three positions do precede the inner triangle suggests that the inner triangle must facilitate their passage, rather than the discontinuities/points of action.)

      To step back from the problem it is clear that what is trying to be done is the place nine points (necessary for an enneagram) into a circle of seven points. However, it must be understood that to build an Enneagram, a circle is initially divided into 9 parts labeled 1-9. Then, when dividing the numbers by 7, a repeating decimal is used to define the enneagram symbol and its direction. The unassigned numbers 3 and 6 are part of an inner triangle.

      This is where the confusion begins because these points are then labeled 'do'-'ti' or 'si' like a piano by convention. However, with the exception of 'do', these positions 'mi'-'ti' do not correspond to these notes on a piano. Now, we might infer their similarity to actually notes, but, as shown previously, musical harmony exists only in "Autoegocrat" not in our "Trogoautoegocratic" universe. Points of action only exist in an Enneagram.


      Let us look at the "par de deux" dance of the devil and the angel in my essay:

      Observe how the active, passive, neutralizing forces of the inner triangle of Triamazikamno (blue arrows) assist the passage through the notes of the Enneagram.

      This left side is controlled by the Enneagram This right side is what I theorize is Harnel-Aoot

      Before proceeding I must admit to a sleight of hand where on the last panel, the devil does not swap with the angel, but assists the angel to the next note. This was required for the devil to be at 'do' on the next swap. This may point to an idiosyncrasy in the neutral side or is perhaps normal for the neutral force.

      The complicated structure that Gurdjieff describes for Harnel-Aoot that he links with the two Mdnel's as the main process that creates the whole Trogoautoegocratic Universe which exists today is not easily explainable. In fact it seems more like magic:

      BT39.754-5 "As regards the third Stopinder, then changed in its 'subjective action' and which is fifth in the general successiveness and is called 'Harnel-Aoot,' its disharmony flowed by itself from the change of the two aforementioned Stopinders. "This disharmony in its subjective functioning, flowing from its asymmetry so to say in relation to the whole entire completing process of the sacred Heptaparaparshinokh, consists in the following:

      1. "If the completing process of this sacred law flows in conditions, where during its process there are many 'extraneously-caused-vibrations,' then all its functioning gives only external results.
      2. "But if this same process proceeds in absolute quiet without any external 'extraneously-caused-vibrations' whatsoever, then all the results of the action of its functioning remain within that concentration in which it completes its process, and for the outside, these results only become evident on direct and immediate contact with it.
      3. "And if however during its functioning there are neither of these two sharply opposite conditions, then the results of the action of its process usually divide themselves into the external and the internal.
      4. What I propose is the that the two Mdnel's positions that are described with Harnel-Aoot in BT39.753-4 shown previously are just a part of Harnel-Aoot which acts as the inner triangle in the Eneagram so that:

        1. Active Force ('mi-fa') in Harnel-Aoot is the 'mechano-coinciding-Mdnel-In' which I will call Harnel-Aoot #1
        2. Passive Force ('ti-do')in Harnel-Aoot is the 'intentionally-actualized-Mdnel-In' which I will call Harnel Aoot #2
        3. Then the Harnel-Aoot position ('sol-la) called merely Harnel-Aoot should be Neutral Force. which I now rename Harnel-Aoot #3

        To further understand Harnel-Aoot, we must look at its cousin "Harnel-miatznel" and see how it relates to "Harnel-Aoot" especially in the Food Octave:

        It appears that Harnel-miatznel by using a local functioning of the Law of Three facilitates the the passage from one note to the other, whereas Harnel-Aoot acts as the Law of Three within the whole Octave as the central triangle to fill in those places that Harnel-miatznel cannot act.

        The definition of "Harnel-miatznel" is as follows:
        BT39.751 "And in regard to the second primordial fundamental cosmic law, and, namely, the Sacred-Triamazikamno, common-cosmic objective science also formulates with the words:

        BT39.785-6 "'A new arising from the previously arisen through the "Harnel-miatznel," the process of which is actualized thus: the higher blends with the lower in order to actualize the middle and thus becomes either higher for the preceding lower, or lower for the succeeding higher;

        and this Sacred-Triamazikamno consists of three independent forces, which are called: the first, 'Surp-Otheos'; the second, 'Surp-Skiros'; the third, 'Surp-Athanatos'; which three holy forces of the sacred Triamazikamno the said science calls as follows:

        1. the first, the Affirming-force' or the 'Pushing-force' or simply the 'Force-plus';
        2. the second, the 'Denying-force' or the 'Resisting-force' or simply the 'Force-minus';
        3. and the third, the 'Reconciling-force' or the 'Equilibrating-force' or the 'Neutralizing-force.'"

        (Each one of these three forces are also part of Harnel Aoot.)

        "It is necessary to tell you also that the first appearance of every kind of concentration from the Etherokrilno which is found everywhere in the Universe owing to the second-grade cosmic law, the Attraction-and-Fusion-of-Similarities, proceeds in the following manner:

        "If particles of Etherokrilno which are already found in the different spheres of all seven Stopinders of the fundamental 'common-cosmic Ansanbaluiazar' collide for some reason or another, they begin the arising of all kinds of 'crystallizations' which do not yet have any subjective properties, and furthermore if these particles of Etherokrilno fall for some reason or other into conditions where a process of 'Harnel-miatznel' proceeds, they fuse into one, and owing to the what are called 'complex-vibrations' acquired in them, are transformed into active elements already with definite specific properties."

        "And if thereafter these already definite active elements with their own specific-subjective properties enter into other processes of 'Harnel-miatznel' which have other conditions, they again fuse with each other according to the same law of 'affinity of vibrations,' and thus acquiring other properties, are transformed into active elements of another 'Okhtapanatsakhnian class,' and so on and so forth."

        Clearly, 'Harnel-miatznel' is a powerful force as it has the ability to create every element. With 'Harnel-Aoot' having the same prefix one would expect that they must work together. In fact, it appears to confirm my definition of Harnel-Aoot of having the three forces acting within it, but in this case "Harnel-Aoot" acts globally. Thus, although "Harnel-miatznel"can almost complete the "Food Octave" by itself, there are three places where "Harnel-Aoot" must assist which are in fact the points of the inner triangle:


        As I indicated in my previous essay: The Key to Soul Is Within The Missing Stopinder in the Gurdjieff Food Octave there are problems with the Food Octave (my changes noted in green), but for the purposes of this paper they are not important. All that needs to be seen is the importance of "Harnel-miatznel" in the process of creating food for the human body. (I have assumed that "Harnel-miatznel" also acts at 'la-ti' between the Endocrine System and the Sex Center, although not mentioned by Gurdjieff because of his error of not including the Endocrine System.)

        Clearly, there are three places where the so-called 'discontinuities' are bridged to complete the processes, since "Harnel-miatznel" by itself cannot proceed due to the change of His Endlessness from "Autoegocrat" to "Trogoautoegocrat":

        • the first position between 'mi-fa' where Gurdjieff would place the "mechano-coinciding Mdnel-In" to mimic World Creation, called by me 'Harnel-Aoot #1' Active force is acting from 'do' to 'mi-fa' with the food from Digestive System and air from the lungs via the Circulatory System System
        • and the second position where Gurdjieff would place "Harnel-Aoot" to mimic World Creation, 'called by me Harnel-Aoot #2' Passive force is acting from 'mi-fa' to 'sol-la' with "thought impressions" from the brain.
        • and the third position between 'ti' and 'do' where Gurdjieff would place the "intentionally-actualized-Mdnel-In" to mimic World Creation, caled by me 'Harnel-Aoot #3' Neutral force is acting from 'sol-la' to 'do' with "love attraction" from the Endocrine System and the Sexual System to conceive a child.

        Rather than having a complicated third force called "Harnel-Aoot" at 'sol-la' that can be changed in its action by

        1. 'chaos'
        2. 'quiet'
        3. or none of these

        there is just the inner triangle which directs the complete process with its Active, Passive, and Neutralizing sides.
        Note that this is contrary to common labeling the points of the triangle as Active ('do'), Passive ('fa') , Neutral ('sol):

Next Harnel-Aoot can be applied to Ouspensky's "Ray of Creation"

The linear "Ray of Creation" in "In Search of the Miraculous" appears to die in the moon, but in "The Holy Planet "Purgatory"' Gurdjieff discards the one dimensional 'Ray of Creation' and presents a three dimensional Creation in time and space based on 'Harnel-Aoot'.

The three forces of Harnel-Aoot, create the three levels of the Megalocosmos as follows:

  1. Sun and Milky Way created (not by Harnel-Aoot "extraneously-caused-vibrations'- external 100%") but by Harnel-Aoot #1 Active Force
  2. Earth and Solar System created (not by Harnel-Aoot "absolute quiet without any external extraneously-caused-vibrations" - internal 100%) but Harnel-Aoot#2 Passive Force
  3. Humans and Organic Life created (not by Harnel-Aoot "neither of these two sharply opposite conditions" - 50% external/50% internal) but by Harnel-Aoot#3 Neutral Force.

(Note that each of the three Levels of Creation is similar to Harnel-miatznel because the first Cosmos and second Cosmos act together with the neutral force coming from the previous Level. For the Level #1 (the exception) "Word God" (Theomertmalogos) is the neutral force; for the Level #2, Level #1 is the neutral force; for Level #3, Level #2 is the neutral force.)

Clearly, the simplest conclusion is that 'Harnel-Aoot' is not one force with three aspects but three forces resembling active, passive and neutralizing within the inner triangle in the Enneagram. Thus the designation of Harnel-Aoot in Creation at position (sol-la) should be designated as' Harnel-Aoot #3' Neutral force acting from 'sol-la' to 'do' , then 'Harnel-Aoot #1' Active force acting from 'do' to 'mi-fa', and ''Harnel-Aoot #2' passive force acting from 'mi-fa' to 'sol-la'.
It is Harnel-Aoot which controls the Creation of the three levels of Cosmoses by means of the inner triangle of three. It also allows for a true human to take in the refined spiritualized materials of the two higher sets of Cosmoses in the form of air (having become 'agape love") to form the Spirit and impressions (having become the 'higher reason') to form a Soul. Thus man can become the true image of God rather that being ruled by "a very old man, with a heavy white beard" (BT39.777). Having this blueprint of the Harnel-Aoot inner triangle, humans become part of the realm of planets in the Mesocosmos and realm of stars in the Macrocosmos.
